In a submission to Reddit’s infamous “AmITheAhole” forum, u/Parentsliedthrow3 explained to the community why they might be the ahole in their situation.
The Reddit user discussed the problems they’ve been having with their sinuses growing up. They couldn’t taste or smell and would breathe out of their mouth. Mucus was also a big problem as well.
“I went through so much clothes and bedding because of getting snot all over everything and my clothes too. I got made fun of a lot at school and it used to make my teachers angry. I was so self conscious and didn’t have any friends. My parents always said there was no cure or anything when they took me to the doctor,” they wrote.
According to Kids Health, children don’t begin developing sinuses in the forehead until they are between the ages of 9 and 12. It will be a while until they are fully developed to be diagnosed with a sinus infection.
They explained a move from Nevada to Louisana for a job opening. While living there, they had no mucus, taste, or smell issues. Sleep is no longer a problem as well.
For the first time in many years, they went to see a doctor. There have been problems when they lived at home since their father didn’t have good insurance. The new doctor retrieved the old medical records and discovered the OP’s (original poster) reasoning for sinus and nose problems. Their parents knew what could stop the issues but did nothing.
“In my old records it says a bunch of times the dry air hurts my sinuses. The doctor says a less dry climate would relieve them but besides that there is medication and a humidifier would help. It says so over and over.”
When they brought it up with their parents, they got mad, claiming that the information in those records was private.
“My mom said they didn’t try medication because it was too much of a hassle to remember to give me the pills. My dad said moving was out of the question since it would remove my sister from her friends and a humidifier was too much work for mom.”
The doctor said the medical information would have been helpful, so when they got older they could take care of the medication themselves. Their sister also left them a bunch of calls and text messages yelling at them for “snooping in the medical records.” All of the Redditor’s medication was too much for them to handle.
Redditors were quick to defend the OP in the comment section.
“NTA… yes those records were private- but they weren’t private from YOU! Those are YOUR RECORDS! Your parents were being very neglectful, and awful. I’m so glad you can live your new life in a place that is healthy for you,” u/tinyredbird wrote in a viral comment with 16,700 upvotes.
U/bourbonmakesmehappy said, “Apparently being a parent was too much work for them as well. This is negligence, plain and simple.
“I treat my houseplants better than OP was treated by their parents,” u/Majestic-Dance-1196 wrote in the replies of the comment above.
“I would be LIVID. That they wouldn’t even get you a bloody humidifier is straight up neglect and anyone being angry about your accessing your medical records is insane,” u/DutchWinchester86 exclaimed.
U/odanu commented, “NTA: Your parents’ responsibility to you as a child was to see to your needs, which includes your medical needs. And for them to claim that your medical records should have been kept private from you is pure bulls**t. I am sorry that they put theirs and your sister’s convenience over your health. You deserved better.”
