King, who tied the Iowa record with eight interceptions this season, is considered one of the top cornerbacks among potential draft-eligible players and had been considered a possible first-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. But 12-2 Iowa’s two-game losing streak to end the season — to Michigan State in the Big Ten championship and then Stanford in the Rose Bowl — left King feeling as if there’s some unfinished business.
“He said he wants to go out in a good way and not in the way where he came from a loss,” King’s mother, Yvette Powell, said. “He wants to win. … He came to me and said everything I was hoping. … Everybody’s surprised. It’s not about the money all the time. The money is going to be there.”
King’s eight interceptions were best in the Big Ten and tied for No. 2 nationally. He also recorded 72 total tackles and 13 pass breakups and had 21 passes defended.
