Because the identical twins (who share identical genes) were so much more likely both to be lesbians than the other sets of sisters, the research suggests that biology plays a role in female homosexuality. But other influences emotional and social-may also contribute, since in more than half the identical-twin pairs, only one sister was gay. Some women claim that their homosexuality is a feminist choice-but most lesbians feel they were born gay. The new study only begins to address this issue. “The question of what, precisely, is inherited still remains,” say the researchers.
