Others were told that there was a problem with their internet connection when using the streaming service and many users also seemed to have issues with songs only playing for a few seconds before automatically pausing.

The problem does not appear to be affecting all users of the service and it is not clear why some people are able to stream as normal while others are not.

Spotify acknowledged the issue via Twitter after thousands of users reported the issues.

“We’re aware of some issues right now and are checking them out! We’ll keep you posted,” the company tweeted.

However, the problems seem to have now been resolved for many users, with Spotify confirming: “Good news! Everything is good to go and looking happy. Still having issues? Give @SpotifyCares a tweet.”

It is not clear what caused the issue at present.

The website Down Detector reports that more than 3,000 users reported issues with the app today, starting at around 13:12 BST.

Most users, 92 percent, said they were unable to stream music, five percent were having problems with Spotify on Sonos, while two percent couldn’t log-in.

Many took to Twitter to express their frustrations with the app malfunctioning, with several people using the #spotifydown hashtag.

One Twitter user tweeted: “#spotifydown yes you came to twitter to check if you weren’t the only one spotify is down.”

While another added: “I have to apologize to my google home mini because I yelled at her and this whole time it was #SpotifyDown.”

Another person joked: “everyone going on twitter to check if their spotify is broken #spotifydown.”

Spotify experienced a similar issue in July when thousands of iPhone users reported that the app crashed for them as soon as they opened it. The issue was confirmed to be part of a broader Facebook iOS SDK problem

The app also crashed on May 7, when the Spotify Status Twitter account acknowledged two separate issues within a few hours of each other on the same day.

If the app is back up and running for you, here’s how to find your top three songs of lockdown and share them on Instagram.
