Also known as Washington’s Birthday, Presidents Day was initially designed to celebrate the birth of the country’s first president on February 22, 1732.
But with George Washington’s birthday close to that of President Abraham Lincoln, who was born on February 11, 1809, “the position of the holiday between the birthdays of Washington and Abraham Lincoln gave rise to the popular name of Presidents Day,” according to the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration.
“While the name change has never been authorized by Congress, it has gained a strong hold on the public consciousness to honor all U.S. presidents, and is generally used on calendars, in advertising and even by many government agencies,” says the National Archives and Records Administration.
Since it is a federal holiday, many government offices and some private businesses will be shut on Presidents Day. But what about the Post Office and other mail services? Below we look at the hours and delivery information for the U.S. Postal Service and courier services on Presidents Day 2022.
U.S. Postal Service
Presidents Day is observed by the U.S. Postal Service. So, all USPS branches will be closed and mail services will not operate. This means USPS will not collect or deliver any letters or packages. Normal services will resume on Tuesday, February 22.
UPS
All UPS services remain open on Presidents Day. This includes all store locations as well as UPS Domestic Ground, Air & International, UPS Forwarding (Air and Ocean) and UPS Express Critical services, according to the company’s website.
FedEx
Most FedEx services are operating on normal hours on Presidents Day, except for FedEx Ground Economy and FedEx Express, which are offering a modified service, according to the company’s website.
For the FedEx Express service, “early on-call and drop box pickups” will be available in some areas.
For FedEx Ground Economy, “deliveries may be delayed” because of the USPS observation of Presidents Day, the company said.
