The news has come as a shock to fans of the famously romantic pair, with many expressing sadness over the break-up.
Momoa and Bonet revealed the news via a joint statement posted on the Aquaman and Dune star’s Instagram on Wednesday night.
It began: “We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times… A revolution is unfolding ~and our family is of no exception… feeling and growing from the seismic shifts occurring. And so~ We share our Family news~That we are parting ways in marriage.”
The statement continued: “We share this not because we think it’s newsworthy ~ But so that~ as we go about our lives we may do so with dignity and honesty.
“The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived. We free each other ~to be who we are learning to become…”
The pair’s love story began long before they met, with Momoa saying he fell in love with Bonet watching her on TV as Denise Huxtable in The Cosby Show.
“Ever since I was like, 8 years old and I saw her on the TV, I was like, ‘Mommy, I want that one,’” Momoa told James Corden on The Late Late Show in 2017.
“I’m like, ‘I’m going to stalk you for the rest of my life and I’m going to get you.’”
They reportedly didn’t meet until 2005, but Bonet has said that they had an instant connection.
“In that moment, love came and it came big, and he did not run as I think a lot of men do,” she told Porter magazine in 2018. “He basically picked me up and threw me over his shoulder, caveman style!”
Momoa, 42, and Bonet, 54, are parents to a daughter, Lola, and a son, Nakoa-Wolf. Bonet also has a daughter, Zoe Kravitz, with her first husband Lenny Kravitz.
News of the break-up is hitting fans hard, with the actors’ names trending on Twitter on Thursday.
“I must take to my bed. Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet are parting ways after seventeen years! Happy to comfort them both in any way the lord sees fit,” tweeted author Roxane Gay.
Another person lamented: “WHAT? Damn, they were so beautiful together.”
One Twitter user wrote: “2022 Doing too much not Lisa Bonet and Jason Momoa.”
