The Giants defensive end on Friday updated his social media avatar on Twitter and Instagram to an x-ray of his mangled right hand, putting into perspective his July 4 fireworks accident that threatened to bring his football career to an end.

Pierre-Paul spent most of the season playing with a heavy club wrap on his hand since losing his right index finger and severely damaging his middle finger and thumb in the accident. He underwent additional surgery on his hand last month with the goal of improving the flexibility in his middle finger so that he can grip better and play without the club.

Pierre-Paul, 27, missed eight games this season as a result of the injury but made his debut in Week 10 and finished the year with one sack and 26 combined tackles.
