Shared on Monday on the popular subreddit r/Cringetopia, the user Former-Billionaire – who goes by the name BG – posted the screenshots with the caption: “This guy asking why I sent a Venmo to his fiancé over 2 years ago. He sent me $1 just to ask me.”
In the message screenshots, the man wrote: “[I] saw a Venmo transaction between you and my fiancé [that I] was just curious about.”
The poster replied asking: “Who is your fiancé? Maybe I can clear it up,” before the man said: “Be a lot easier to text so I can show you the Venmo transaction. We’re done I just wanna know for peace of mind.”
The man refused to give his mobile number to the mystery Venmo user, who went on to detail his fiancé’s name and the transaction in question.
As the conversation continued, the man asked more questions about the transaction before the poster wrote: “My Venmo transactions 2+ years ago or 2 seconds ago are none of your business.”
The man replied and said: “Tough on Venmo. It is my business when it’s between me and my fiancé. I call some serious bull**** bro. I would love for you to talk to my face like that. Would love it.”
The post sharing the awkward reaction now has over 43,000 upvotes and thousands of comments.
BG, who is from Texas, told Newsweek: “I thought it was extremely bizzare. I’ve seen insecure men before, but this VenBro took it to a whole new level.”
One user said: “He’s too jealous to be married. Hopefully she finds out before it’s too late,” while another wrote: “Can anyone say ‘insecure’?”
Owned by PayPal, Venmo is a U.S. mobile payment service that is aimed at helping friends and family split bills and send money at the touch of a button. Information from Statista reports that in 2021 $60 billion of payments were processed by Venmo.
In February, a survey of online payment users in the U.S. found that 32 percent of respondents had used Venmo in the past 12 months, with only parent company PayPal ranking above them when it came to consumer payment choices.
Aside from the threatening tone of the messages, many Redditors picked up on the invasion of privacy for the man’s fiancée. One user wrote: “This isn’t a red flag, this is the Soviet Union. This lady will never know a second of peace or privacy. I would definitely be looking this chick up on Facebook and sending her this.”
Another Redditor said: “He seems like a nice, non-emotional abusive, husband.”
Later the poster updated in the comments and said: “I have no idea who she is. She was a random person who donated to a campaign. But yeah, I feel very bad for her. Going back 2 years on someone’s Venmo is weird.”
BG said: “The responses were funny. Everyone has met someone like this so it resonated with a lot of people. Literally no one took this guys side.”
