Originally, Charlo was slated to meet current WBC titleist Tony Harrison in a rematch from their bout in December when Harrison shocked the boxing world to win a controversial decision in a fight many boxing pundits felt should have gone to Charlo. Cota (28-3, 25 KOs) last fought in April when he lost a split decision to Jeison Rosario on the Danny Garcia-Adrian Granados undercard. Before then, Cota had won three consecutive fights, all of them coming via stoppage. Cota has fought primarily in his home country, with 25 of his 28 fights coming in Mexico. The majority of the boxers Cota has stepped inside the ring with are unknowns. The fighters he has lost to are all known and respectable fighters: Rosario and stoppage losses to Marco Antonio Rubio and Erickson Lubin. Charlo (31-1, 15 KOs) knocked out Lubin in the first round back in October 2017.
