If one were to believe the critics, the government’s judicial reform, if successfully implemented, would make Israel more “authoritarian,” undermine the country’s “liberal democracy,” result in “democratic backsliding,” or—egad!...

At least 5,200 migratory cranes have been killed, with farmers forced to slaughter hundreds of thousands of chickens. The situation is still not under control, Uri Naveh, a senior scientist at the Israel Parks and Nature Authority, said. “Many of the birds are dead in the middle of the water body so it’s difficult for them to be taken out,” Naveh said Monday. The Iraqi dictator probably never intended his attack on the Kurdish region to be primarily a challenge to Clinton. More likely, he was responding to an Iranian military incursion into the region last July, designed to hunt down Iranian rebels and shore up a Kurdish faction supported by Iran. This made Saddam look weak to the constituency that matters most to him: Iraq’s Republican Guard and security apparatus. According to reports from Baghdad, Saddam had already been forced to put down a coup attempt against him earlier this year, executing more than 200 officers....

As fans eagerly await the third installment, the movie has hit headlines under deeply unfortunate circumstances. On Monday, October 31, the head caterer for the movie, named in reports as MB, suffered a fatal heart attack outside a pub in the town. His death sparked an official drug search of the catering staff hotel rooms after cocaine was reportedly found in his pocket. Additionally, his wife, who was with him at the time of his death, told investigators that MB suffered from heart disease....

On Tuesday, watchdog Democracy Forward filed a lawsuit related to a September Freedom of Information Act request for records from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH). The complaint says HUD announced on September 4 that grant funds would serve “minor and adult foreign national victims” of human trafficking. On September 8, five days after announcing non-citizens would be eligible, the grant was “cancelled without explanation,” Democracy Forward’s complaint states....
