A Ugandan man detonated explosives in a suicide bombing on Sunday in the eastern town of Beni, a city occupied by both U.N. peacekeepers and the Congolese army in recent years. The IS affiliate claimed it as its first suicide bombing, the Associated Press reported. But authorities said the man was a member of the Allied Democratic Forces, a rebel group. ADF has pledged its allegiance to the IS group, but no such information confirming that the organizations were working together on the bombings has come to light....

Over the past week, two mass pilot whale strandings have occurred on two different areas in the Chatham Islands, an incredibly remote place off the eastern coast of New Zealand’s South Island. According to marine mammal rescue organization Project Jonah, a total of 477 whales were stranded in just a few days. Marine mammal strandings happen globally. They are a common occurrence, but the cause remains a mystery to scientists....

With just over 11 minutes remaining in the third period of the Islanders’ 6-2 loss to the Canadiens, New York’s Johnny Boychuk and Montreal’s Artturi Lehkonen got tangled up in front of the home team’s net. Boychuk pushed Lehkonen out of the crease, and as the Montreal forward fell, his right skate came up and clipped Boychuk in the face. The Islanders defenseman immediately grabbed his face and was in obvious pain on the ice....

That is increasingly apparent. Until two months ago, Fiji was the South Pacific’s model multiethnic democracy. Not anymore. Today, an Indian minority making up 44 percent of the country’s population wants desperately to flee. The reason: George Speight, a power-hungry ex-businessman who has demanded that Indians be excluded from all future Fijian governments. In the name of indigenous rights, Speight led masked gunmen in a May 19 raid on Parliament....

But what is already certain is what this new government has taught us about “expert” commentary in the U.S. about Israel. It has been woefully wrong. On Sunday, Israel swore in a new government. Led by Prime Minister Naftali Bennet and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid, the new coalition comprises eight widely disparate parties: three from the right, two from the center, two from the left, and one Arab party....

Israel had been using the technology on and off since March 2020, per Reuters, to curb the spread of the pandemic. A study conducted by the U.S. military looked at 660 HIV-positive patients treated at a naval hospital. Not one of the study participants met the definition of wasting, once a hallmark of HIV infection. Instead, 63% met the clinical criteria for obesity, effectively the same rate seen in the general U.S. population. With people with HIV now living longer than ever, weight has become more of a problem than ever....

To prove the point, let’s briefly review the history of network news in prime time: In 1954, when TV was young, viewers could see a half hour of Edward R. Murrow’s legendary “See It Now” (where he took on Sen. Joseph McCarthy), a half hour of Murrow’s “Person to Person” (where he interviewed Marilyn Monroe) and a half hour of an NBC news show called “Big Story” for a total of one and a half hours of prime-time news programming a week....

Storm clouds are gathering, but the storm will probably not last very long. While financial stocks have suffered a correction, most equity markets are robust thanks to corporate profits. Companies continue to reap the benefits of globalization. At the same time, workers and consumers enjoy rates of unemployment that are either very low, as in the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan, or falling rapidly, as in Continental Europe, where labor markets have also become more flexible in recent years....
